Your Advocacy Works!
From incentive zoning to affordable housing linkage fees, we know it’s been a long ride. However, we are happy to announce that Tuesday, the Seattle City Council’s Planning, Land Use, and Sustainability Committee (PLUS) voted unanimously in favor of Resolution 31551, establishing the City’s intent to implement an affordable housing linkage fee program in Seattle. Thank you to all of you who have stepped up to advocate on behalf of this critical issue—emails, calls to councilmembers, and public testimony have been a big reason that this Resolution passed out of the PLUS Committee. Advocacy works!
Now that Resolution 31551 has made it through the PLUS Committee, it’s on to the full City Council for a vote. The Council will vote on this Resolution this coming Monday, October 20th, at 2pm. Join us for testimony at Seattle City Hall, in Council Chambers. Email Kayla if you are able to make it, and you will be sent talking points.
HDC, as a member of the Growing Together Coalition strongly supports affordable housing linkage fees as an effective tool to address Seattle’s affordable housing crisis. We believe that Seattle should be a City where everyone can share in growth and prosperity, a City where people of all incomes can thrive.
Unfortunately, new growth has made it harder for Seattle’s low and moderate wage workers to find housing near jobs, transit, and other important amenities for a healthy lifestyle. That’s why we support an affordable housing linkage fee program with the highest legally and economically feasible contribution. We know we need this program soon if we are going to make sure Seattle’s workers and their families can afford to live near their jobs in the city.
Can’t make it on the 20th? Not a problem, you can also call a City Councilmember. Pick someone you have a good relationship with, who is likely to represent your district, or who may need a little extra nudge. You can find phone numbers and a suggested message for each Councilmember here.
We know many of you have already taken action, but we need to keep this momentum going. In order to show the Council that we support this promising step forward for affordable housing in our city, please take action today. If your time is limited but you want to show your support, there are still three more ways you can take action between now and Monday to make sure the Seattle City Council takes a strong position in support of the affordable housing linkage fee:
- Sign-on your organization to a letter in support of Resolution 31551. Email Kayla if you would like more details.
- Email the City Council and Mayor Murray to tell them you support Resolution 31551 by going to HDC’s website. We have some NEW sample language for you. All you have to do is fill in your contact information, press submit, and you’re done! But, if you can, please take a moment to personalize your e-mail. Even simply changing the Subject line and one or two sentences will make your message MUCH more effective.
- Share this blog post with your friends, family, and co-workers, and ask them to take action, too!
Thank you for all you do to make sure everyone can have a safe, healthy, affordable home in a community of opportunity. Thanks to your advocacy, we are one step closer to making this vision a reality.
