McDermott Place will provide 75 permanent affordable housing units for homeless individuals, with 38 of the units designated specifically for veterans. North Helpline, a non-profit organization based in Lake City, will own a portion of the building at which they will operate the Lake City/Northgate Food Bank and the RotaCare Medical & Dental Clinic. This fall, the University of Washington will again be offering its Community Development Certificate Program, a nine-month program for current professionals and volunteers as well as for those seeking to enter the field. Leading local practitioners and UW faculty will provide 90 hours of classroom instruction designed to familiarize participants with the history, purpose and breadth of community development; to build skills in community organizing, neighborhood assessment, and organizational development; and to share effective tools for neighborhood revitalization, poverty reduction, and real estate development.
