Our Advocacy Work

Advocacy is central to our work at the Housing Development Consortium of Seattle-King County. Our goal is to increase the production of affordable housing in King County through public policy, increased resources, greater sector efficiency, and partnerships committed to social equity within sustainable communities. We work closely with a broad-reaching network to advocate for and implement public policies that create safe, healthy, affordable homes throughout King County. Learn about our recent advocacy wins.

We need every voice to speak out in support of bold housing change! If you’re ready to take advocacy action with us, please sign up for our Tuesday Advocacy Alerts.

Our Advocacy Priorities

Increasing Funding for Affordable Homes

We currently face a shortfall of 149,000 affordable homes. That number is expected to grow to 212,000 homes by 2044. The need cannot be met at current funding levels.

We’re demanding bold, collaborative investments at the local, state, and federal level to close this widening gap.

Building & Maintaining Inclusive Communities

To promote prosperity for all King County residents, our growth must be equitable.

We’re calling for policy changes that create abundant and affordable housing, prevent displacement, allow low-income people to live near transit and jobs, and advance racial equity.

Increasing Housing Health, Stability & Sustainability

Affordable, safe, quality housing is a key element in creating a healthy community, especially in this deepening climate crisis.

We’re advocating for a proactive approach to housing stability for renters and low-income homeowners, and a sustainable built environment for heathier and livable places.

Our Approach

At HDC, we believe in the power of collaboration. We work closely with government, housing providers, equity advocates, businesses, and community coalitions to advocate for and implement public policies that create safe, healthy, affordable homes throughout King County.

At the local level, we are focused on increasing funding for affordable housing, building and maintaining inclusive communities with a greater housing growth and diversity to achieve a variety of housing types, ensuring equitable housing access, stability and sustainability.

At the state level, we work with legislators, affordable housing advocates and community members to lead and promote legislation that will create revenue sources and support the development, operation, and preservation of affordable housing.

At the national level, we monitor Federal housing legislation and support expanded funding for affordable housing, including through Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) reforms and HUD programs like the Section 8 voucher program.
